Teen Arrested After Attempted Theft at Los Gatos Safeway

According to police, 19-year-old was caught while exiting the store stealing bottles of alcohol.

A 19-year-old man was arrested by Los Gatos-Monte Sereno police officers earlier this month for allegedly trying to steal alcohol from a local supermarket.

According to a police report, Steven Jani was booked into Santa Clara County Jail after being apprehended by local cops at 1:26 a.m. Aug. 3 on suspicion of commercial burglary at the Safeway located at 15549 Union Ave.

Jani was caught as he was exiting Safeway stealing bottles of liquor. Police say he had entered the store with the intent to commit the theft, the report said.

Safeway management declined comment this week about the incident and referred calls to corporate headquarters in Pleasanton. However, store employees, who requested anonymity, said the store has not seen a recent increase in such thefts in the wee hours of the night as was this case. "We're not aware of any other incidents," said one sales associate.
