Updated: Saratoga Shooting Sends Deputy, Suspect to Hospital

A deputy and a suspect are transported to a hospital, agency says in a tweet.

Two sheriff's deputies were injured and a man described as suicidal is in critical condition after being shot by a deputy this afternoon in Saratoga, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

The deputies were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, sheriff's Sgt. Kurtis Stenderup said.

Deputies received a report at 12:01 p.m. today of a suicidal man in the 12000 block of Saratoga Avenue, near McFarland Avenue, Stenderup said.

Fire units were also sent to the scene. The man then got into some sort of altercation with a deputy, who fired at least one shot that injured the man, Stenderup said.

Update: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10: Bay City News Service is reporting that
a Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy who shot a man described as suicidal in Saratoga this afternoon was also injured in the incident, and both are being treated at a hospital.

Sheriff's deputies responded to a 12:01 p.m. report of a suicidal man in the 12000 block of Saratoga Avenue, near McFarland Avenue, Sgt. Kurtis Stenderup told BCN.

Fire units were also sent to the scene. After deputies arrived, there was some kind of altercation between the man and the deputy, BCN reported.

The deputy fired at least one shot, wounding the man, Stenderup told BCN.

The deputy was also injured, and was taken to a hospital in stable condition, Stenderup said.

The condition of the man who was shot was not yet available, and deputies are at the scene talking to witnesses and gathering evidence, Stenderup said.

Update: 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10:
CBS SF Bay Area is reporting that a Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy and a suspect were involved in a shooting after an altercation Tuesday afternoon in Saratoga.

The shooting, which occurred at Saratoga and McFarland avenues near a business complex, came after the suspect hit the deputy, CBS said in its report.

Update: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10:
NBC Bay Area News is reporting that a Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy and a suspect have been taken to an area hospital following an officer-involved shooting this afternoon.

News about the shooting was tweeted out by the agency Tuesday afternoon.

A sheriff's spokesperson told the station that the call came in around noon as a report of a suicidal male at an office park.

After deputies arrived on scene, shots were subsequently fired, the sheriff's spokesperson told the network.

This is the second officer-involved shooting for the sheriff's department in less than a month, the TV station said.

On Nov. 16, Deputy Jennifer Galan shot and killed Andrea Naharro-Gionet, 61, of San Jose, who deputies say wouldn't drop her knife on Cleveland Avenue in unincorporated San Jose, NBC Bay Area said.
