When ecstatic San Francisco Giants fans gathered in Civic Center Plaza for Wednesday's World Series victory celebration, there was more than excitement lingering in the air.
The strong scent of marijuana was noticeable throughout the plaza as crowds amassed for the victory party at the end of the parade route.
Pipes and joints were visible from the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium to the tree-lined heart of the plaza to the steps of the San Francisco Main Public Library.
Clouds of smoke hovered above the throngs of fans, some of whom had shown up before dawn to stake out a good spot.
Jewel Jalandoni, who was visiting the Bay Area from the Philippines, said there was so much smoke at Civic Center on Wednesday that she got sick.
She said the air was "so bad I threw up."
Another attendee, who did not want to give his name, said, "Holy Moly! The liquor and pot made it more like a mosh pit than a family event."
The pungent scent in the air was noted on social media sites, with some Tweeting, "There is SO much weed up in here," and "Love the smell of pot in the am... Smells like: VICTORY!"
Another person Tweeted, "Marijuana, official sponsor of the Civic Center Giants viewing."
San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said Thursday he didn't notice the smell from where he was during the ceremony, but said, "We would like to field any complaints" about the marijuana use.
"We want everyone to enjoy it," Lee said of the parade and celebration. "I think we are going to have to pay some attention to that when we have these quite dense celebrations."
