Police Arrest 60 in Holiday DUI Crackdown, So Far

The number of arrests in the first two days of the annual Winter Holiday anti-DUI crackdown, is actually down from 79 at the same time last year.

Police across the county arrested 60 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the first two days of a county-wide annual winter holiday crackdown, the county Sheriff's Office spokesman said.

It was down significantly from last year, according to Sgt. Jose Cardoza in a news release. In 2011, 79 DUI arrests occurred during the same 48 hour time period.

During the anti-DUI crackdown, all regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers focus efforts at stopping and arresting DUI drivers during their normal shifts during the crackdown. In addition, funds have been devoted to multiple DUI/driver’s license checkpoints, multi-agency DUI task force operations and local roving DUI patrols, as part of this region-wide crackdown during the 19-day Winter Holiday Campaign.

Law enforcement encourage all motorists watch for drunk drivers and call 911.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. DUI arrest data collection will continue throughNew Year’s Weekend, midnight Sunday, January 1, 2013.

Glad to hear that DUI arrests are down. Hopefully people are getting the message. Also I think the announcements of crackdowns are a good idea. It gives me a reminder as well as a sense that the police are watching out for me-in a good way. Keep up the good work.

I think that DUI is over-rated. I, for one, have never had a single incident when driving drunk. Well, not that I can remember anyway.
