Man Loses Both Hands in Fireworks Explosion in East San Jose

A man in East San Jose lost both of his hands on Friday night when a firework he was holding exploded, a police spokesman said.

The firework explosion occurred around 9 p.m. on the Fourth of July holiday in the 1300 block of Leeward Drive near Cassel Park, San Jose police Officer Albert Morales said today.

Multiple news reports named the victim as 40 year-old Alazar Ortiz.

Both of the man's hands were blown off in the blast, but he is expected to survive his injuries, Morales said.

According to a report from NBC News in San Diego, the victim was lighting illegal, "professional-grade" fireworks that prematurely went off. Family members told NBC that the victim is a construction worker, whose livelihood will surely be impacted by his injuries.

"For $50, he blows his two hands," Ortiz's nephew Luis told the station.

Police have not said why the firework exploded or identified the specific firework that injured the victim.

"It would have had to have been something pretty powerful," Morales said.
