Los Gatos Homeless Man Steals Electric Mobility Scooter From Safeway

Local transient charged with grand theft.

A Los Gatos homeless man this month stole an electric mobility scooter to assist persons with disabilities or the elderly from , police said.

Corey Baker, 59, a local transient, took the Mart-Cart electric scooter at about 1 p.m. Feb. 10 and fled the scene, police added.

At 2:58 p.m., about two hours after the cart was reported stolen, Los Gatos Monte Sereno police Sgt. J.R. Langer located the cart abandoned near 459 Monterey Ave., south of Andrews Street, police said.

The scooter's theft, estimated at $995, was captured by store video cameras, said Los Gatos Monte Sereno police Sgt. spokesman Kerry Harris.

Baker was contacted by police and admitted to taking and later abandoning the scooter, Harris said.

The case is being submitted to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office for review of a 487 penal code grand theft prosecution, Harris added.

Safeway store management said only customers can use the carts, which are prohibited from being taken off the premises or even be ridden in the business' parking lot.
