A teenage boy was killed and two others injured when their car hit a tree and burst into flames in Santa Clara County near Los Gatos on Saturday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported around 10:50 p.m. Saturday on state Highway 35 near Ward Road, CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said.

The 17-year-old driver and two 16-year-old passengers, all residents of Sunnyvale, were in a black Acura TL heading east on Highway 35, when for unknown reasons the vehicle left the roadway, the CHP said.

The Acura struck a tree on the right sight of the roadway, then overturned and hit a second tree, the CHP said. When the Acura caught fire, the two passengers were able to escape.

The driver was unable to get out of the burning car and was later found dead in the driver's seat by responding Cal Fire units, the CHP said.

The two survivors were taken to a hospital. One suffered a broken femur and major burns, and the second suffered a bruised lung and abrasions, according to the CHP.

Alcohol and drugs were not considered to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
