Horses Running Loose in Los Gatos?

Yes, indeed, three equines escaped from their corral early Saturday morning to the shock of passersby, according to police.

Los Gatos Patch reader Joyce Perrelli emailed us Tuesday reporting that four horses were running loose on Los Gatos-Saratoga Road at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Yes, you read that right, four equines galloping at a fast rate of speed down the semi-rural road connecting Los Gatos to Saratoga, or Highway 9, just northwest of the downtown area.

"Do you know where they came from, why they were running loose, and what happened? My daughter was pretty freaked out about it and keeps asking ... ," Perrelli said.

Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Det. Katherine Mann confirmed what Perrelli reported and said dispatch received a call from a passerby reporting seeing between four and five horses trotting along the busy thoroughfare at 8:59 a.m. Saturday.

Officers arrived on scene and quickly got three run-away horses pointed in the right direction, as they had been heading west on Highway 9, Detective Mann said.

Santa Clara County Fire Department personnel ended up on scene as well to give everyone a hand. The firefighters might have been in the area already as the LGMSPD did not call on them for assistance, Detective Mann added.

The owner of the horses, who was not identified, was also on scene to help retrieve the animals that were corralled back to their home on Highway 9 within 15 minutes.

"Not sure why there were running loose in the first place, but if horses were to get loose on Highway 9 I suppose they picked a good time as to do so. I can only imagine the mess that would have caused during rush hour," Detective Mann quipped.
