UPDATE: 2 Firefighters Injured in 125-Acre Brush Fire in South San Jose

UPDATED: Monday, June 30, 7:30 p.m.

Two firefighters were taken to a hospital with heat injuries today in a 125-acre vegetation fire southeast of San Jose that stood at about 50 percent contained by late afternoon, a fire official said.

The fire went to four alarms with the San Jose Fire Department, Cal Fire, Santa Clara County fire and the Santa Clara and Morgan Hill fire departments assisting, San Jose fire Capt. Cleo Doss said.

The injuries that two San Jose Fire Department firefighters sustained from the fire's heat were "mild" and they were the only people hurt today in the fire, Doss said. The fire was reported at 1:40 p.m. on a hill with grass, brush and trees south of Curie Drive and north of Camden Avenue.

Officials evacuated residents of homes on Scenic Vista Drive and Scenic Vista Court, but no residences were damaged, Doss said. The residents who were evacuated were sent to Leland High School and placed in the care of sheriff's deputies, Doss said.

Estimates about the size of the vegetation fire fluctuated throughout the afternoon from 50 to 70 acres. But Doss said that as of about 6 p.m., the fire had covered 125 acres.

The hillside blaze stood at about 50 percent contained but fire crews have stopped it from spreading, Doss said.

About 100 firefighters responded to the fire. Cal Fire used a water tanker, a helicopter and other equipment, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Brandon Leitzke said.

Authorities were blocking people from entering Santa Teresa County Park and from going onto Scenic Vista Drive near the site of the fire, Doss said.
