Firefighter Hurt During Saratoga Odor Inspection

Fall from ladder sends firefighter to Valley Medical Center; suspicious smell remains unknown.

A Santa Clara County firefighter was injured Wednesday afternoon during a suspicious odor check on the roof of the Argonaut Place Shopping Center in Saratoga, according to fire officials.

The center, located at the corner of Blauer Drive and Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road, was being inspected at around 5:15 p.m. after a call came in reporting fumes coming from the Hvac systems, said Santa Clara County Fire Department Arson Unit Chief Dennis Johnsen.

"He fell from the ladder," Johnsen said. "They took him to Valley Medical Center and they're doing tests. He sustained some injuries, but they're not serious."

A total of two engines, one fire truck and a battalion chief responded to the scene, Johnsen said.

"The caller reported they could smell rubber or plastic burning," he said. "But it turned out to be nothing."
