A girl killed in a crash on state Highway 85 in Cupertino that injured three other people Monday has been identified as 8-year-old Megan Yang, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.
Megan was in one of the vehicles involved in the crash on northbound Highway 85 north of De Anza Boulevard at about 3:30 p.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Moments before the accident, the driver of a Jeep Wrangler made an unsafe turn to the right that sent the Wrangler onto the right shoulder and up a raised dirt embankment, according to the CHP.
The Wrangler then struck a Mazda that had stopped on the right shoulder and was carrying Megan, a 6-year-old boy and a 41-year-old woman, all from Cupertino, CHP officials said.
The impact sent the Mazda across three lanes, where it was also struck by the front of a Jeep SUV before coming to rest facing east on the freeway, according to the CHP. Megan suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
The 6-year-old boy was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for major injuries and the 41-year-old woman, who drove the Mazda, was treated at the hospital for minor injuries, CHP officials said.
The Jeep Wrangler overturned on its roof on the right shoulder and ejected the driver, a 56-year-old San Jose man who was transported to the hospital for major injuries, according to the CHP.
The collision remains under investigation by the CHP.
