Coroner IDs Baby Who Died In Rear Of SUV as Los Gatos 9-Month-Old Boy

The child's funeral was held Thursday.

A 9-month-old boy who died earlier this month after he was left in the rear of a vehicle has been identified as Giovanni Hernandez, of Los Gatos, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

The cause of Giovanni's death on April 16 was hyperthermia, or elevated body temperature, while enclosed within an SUV, according to an employee of the medical examiner's office.

The boy's funeral was held last Thursday at the Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park in San Jose, an Oak Hill employee said.

The memorial park's website listed Giovanni's middle name as Alonzo and his birth and death dates as "July 1, 2013-April 16, 2014."

San Jose police reported that the boy's father, who has not been identified, was supposed to drop off his son at a babysitter's house before he went to work the morning of April 16 but he forgot.

He parked his SUV in the 3700 block of Payne Avenue with the infant strapped in the car seat, police Sgt. Heather Randol said.

The father discovered the boy unconscious in the vehicle at the end of the workday, according to Randol.

Police received a call at 7:14 p.m. on April 16 about the unconscious infant, who was pronounced deceased a short time later, Randol said.

The Police Department has not announced whether there will be an arrest in the boy's death.
