Letter to the Editor: Museums of Los Gatos Wants Your Locks of Love

Patch welcomes your thoughts, opinions and contributions. Each missive must include the writer's name, address and daytime phone number, not for publication, but to confirm you're the author of the submission. Send your letters to sheila.

the Museums of Los Gatos is offering itself as a new, alternate venue for the locks.

We invite community members to join us for a first annual Valentine's Day Locks of Love event to honor these gestures of love that inspire our community members, young and old alike.

For any locks that Caltrans removes from the Main Street bridge, the Museums of Los Gatos will place duplicate locks at the new venue.

We applaud the community members responsible for starting this tradition and we intend to continue it for many years to come.

New locks will also be made available at venue locations so everyone can partake in spreading the love.

Artistic public expression enriches our experience of the town and draws attention to our unique cultural landmarks.

Please join us in celebrating our culturally rich community and this international symbol of love! Stay tuned for more information.

Best wishes,

—Emily Welch, exhibitions manager, Museums of Los Gatos

It is good to see someone doing something sensible about this. It is not clear what venue you have. Will there be some kind of structure? Will it be permanent? You talk about placing duplicate locks, what about people removing their locks before CalTrans cuts them down and bringing them to the museum? I have suggested rod and screen sculptures for the locks. Forms relating to Los Gatos and its history: cats, steam trains, grape arbors, historical buildings, maybe a CalTrans bridge. ;-) Perhaps a wall with screen fencing cutout in the shapes of hearts and such. Perhaps an art competition to design such sculptures, exploiting the specific textures of masses of locks. Stephanie Mathews at the Los Gatos Library and Museum History Project has many photos. This is a project that can bring together many people and resources in the community.

Great idea Gary. This seems like the best outcome, a win/win for art lovers and Cal Trans safety concerns.

I have given lots of my hair to locks of love. And it's great to know that these little ones like my curly locks...it's a Blessing!

Sunday afternoon, 3 February, 2013, the locks were gone from the bridge. Also the "Barreled by Plastic" sculpture at the Los Gatos Art Museum has moved on with the Water exhibit to another venue. That makes the location available for a Love Lock installation. Anyone wishing to support the project, contact the Museum through one of the links provided.
