Coughs, Colds and Kids

How to help your child beat the flu bug this season.

Starting next week, my 2-year-old will be heading off into the germ-filled world of daycare.

As a parent, all that keeps spinning are my thoughts and worries of him becoming a “carrier monkey” of the germ. Yuck!

To help manage my “carrier monkey” concerns I have begun doing a bit of research to better understand exactly what can be done to not only keep my little one healthy, but my entire family happy and healthy through the holiday season. Here are some of the most recommended tips I found by asking family and friends:

  • Encourage exercise; doing so helps boost immunity.
  • Provide healthy snacks instead of holiday treats. Good food can provide kids extra energy and a nutritive punch.
  • Wash hands, especially the fingertips which come in contact with germs the most.
  • Include vitamins and minerals, which ensure that children’s daily diet is well balanced boosting health benefits.
  • Provide tissue. It helps kids understand ways to cough or sneeze in ways to reduce the spread of germs.
  • Avoid kisses … as well as sharing food, drinks, utensils, washcloths, toys, etc.
  • Get good rest. Sleep can often be a hidden helper when fighting off colds.
  • Consider the flu shot.

I am hoping that all you parents out there can help grow this list of helpful cold busters. What are your hints when it comes to helping your kids fight the wintertime coughs and colds?
