Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Taking the havoc out of the holidays.

With the arrival of Thanksgiving, the holiday season is now upon us. For many, that means the "fill level" on the calendar goes up 25 percent or more in already busy lives. It’s so easy to get caught up in the doingness of shopping, preparation, activities, etc. and not necessarily being as present as we’d like or need to be in the moment to the meaning of Thanksgiving, celebration, family, gratitude, blessings, etc.

I don’t know who said this quote but it’s one I love every time I read it, “Being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. It means you’ve decided to look past the imperfections and choose to be happy.”

As we enter into this season with its memories, new experiences, traditions, expectations, family, friends, there is huge power and satisfaction in choice. We can choose what to pay attention to, what to acknowledge, notice, celebrate and invite into our lives. Consciousness and intention add to our health and purpose.

In one of my recent posts I gave a link to an article about creating happy families and cheerful homes. How many of these suggestions are part of our regular routine or can be intentionally incorporated, especially during the holiday season?

Or here are 10 simple ways to increase your enjoyment, pleasure, and gratitude:

  1. Give a compliment
  2. Stop and take 3 slow deep breaths
  3. Give someone a hug
  4. Cook a favorite food and enjoy the process from beginning to end
  5. Smile at everyone you make eye contact with
  6. Eat slowly and relish each bite
  7. Enjoy the beauty around you
  8. Stretch like a cat
  9. Drink a glass of water and notice how great it feels going down
  10. End your day in gratitude for the top 10 best things that day

Thanks for the article -- especially since I'm one of those people who get caught up in "the doingness"! Today, I was grateful I could go on the Los Gatos trails with family and friends before the feast.. I saw hundreds of people cycling, walking and running-- enjoying each other's company, the exercise, and the fall colors. Yes, it was a Happy Thanksgiving : )
