Blog: Taking the Leap

When it comes to fear, there is good fear and bad fear.

Last Friday was a beautiful evening in Los Gatos; warm, sunny and breezy. After a walk to  to enjoy some creamy mint cookies on the patio, Sophie and I stopped in at to participate in the Mega Millions madness.

Talk about chaos! There were so many people in there and the poor clerks looked frazzled and exhausted. The line was out the door to buy tickets and you could tell that, like Sophie and I, a lot of the folks in there were not regular lotto players. Crazy.

As Soph and I were walking home we were day dreaming about what we would do if we won the lotto. Sophie is such a prudent and responsible girl! She wouldn’t spend too much of the money. Just a little bit she says for a nice house and car. Then she’d save the rest. My lotto winning dreams were all about houses, travel and business/charitable work. I’d open a Pilates studio, start a non-profit working with young girls and travel the world. Guess what? We didn’t win. ;)

Taking Risks

I’ve been thinking a lot this week about risk taking. Often, we reach a point in our lives when we have so many responsibilities and people who depend on us that taking risks seems, well, risky. It could be considering a new job, wanting to open a business, start a new hobby that may take time and energy away from those you love or spending money on your passions when you should probably keep it in savings in this economy.

When it comes to fear, there is good fear and bad fear. Good fear prevents us from walking down a dark alley. Bad fear stops us from taking risks.

If we aren’t willing to take risks, we must be content with how things are; because the only way to be the catalyst for change in your own life is to step out on that limb. And the risky part is that you don’t always know what will happen, but if you don’t go for it, you know that nothing will change.

I plan to spend the next month making small changes, taking small risks that will help me incorporate those lotto dreams into my everyday life.  Life doesn't reward those who sit on the sidelines.
