If you’re looking for a place to hike and camp with your kids, consider booking a campsite for the weekend at Portola Redwoods State Park. It has a rugged, natural basin forest with coast redwoods, Douglas firs and oaks. The park centers around two creeks, Peters and Pescadero, which flow through the basin.
Portola is perched on the opposite side of the Santa Cruz Mountains from Big Basin Redwoods State Park in San Mateo County. Portola Redwoods State Park is more of a quiet park where people come to relax and hang out. Its main entrance and visitors’ center is located in a redwood grove that’s been protected from logging since 1924. Though there are signs that say the region has been selectively logged, Lawrence Fox’s 1986 inventory of redwood forest classifies the area as old growth. You will not find the giant redwoods here, which can be found in another part of the Bay Area such as Mill Valley.
