Music is one of the joys of life. We have all had the experience of feeling uplifted and taken to another place when a certain song comes on the radio. Believe it or not, the same is true about music education integrated into a school’s regular curriculum, not just as an after school program. Research has found that there are strong correlations between music and academic achievement. They’ve even found that students who study music are more successful on standardized tests and achieve better grades in high school.
Something special happens when students are fully engaged with classmates in listening to and/or playing music. It enhances brain development, physical coordination, language and memory as well as visual aural skills. Music teaches students to think creatively and to solve problems by imagining various solutions and rejecting outdated rules and assumptions. It is important to understand that music doesn’t make a student smarter; it helps enhance their learning experience.
