'Tis the Season - Supervisor Wasserman's December 2013 Newsletter

It’s hard to believe that we will be saying goodbye to 2013 in just a few short weeks. Beginning in January, I will serve as President of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors for 2014 and Supervisor Dave Cortese will serve as Vice-President. The role of Board President rotates between the five elected Supervisors with the President presiding over public meetings and hosting the annual "State of the County" address. The address is open to the public and is scheduled to take place Tuesday morning, January 28, 2014. More details will be available soon, but please mark your calendar now.

Please join me Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 11:00am in downtown Los Gatos, for the 57th Annual Los Gatos Children's Christmas/Holidays Parade— an event that draws 20,000 spectators each year. I am honored that I was chosen to serve as Grand Marshal of this year’s parade. The Grand Marshal is selected annually from the thousands of individuals who have actively volunteered with youth activities in the Los Gatos community. I have been working with children in our community for more than 20 years as a youth sports coach and elected official, so to be recognized for those efforts is a tremendous honor. See you Saturday, rain or shine!

Another special holiday tradition is the Santa Clara County Park’s 15th Annual Fantasy of Lights display at Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos. The 1.5 mile drive-through holiday lights and display is entertainment for the whole family. Fantasy of Lights continues to be the premier holiday lights spectacular in Northern California and it runs through December 31st.

Kim and I enjoyed participating in the Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot through downtown San Jose last week. This fun event was created nine years ago by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group Foundation and has raised more than $3.4 million for local charities. Don’t miss the Trot’s sister event, the TiVo Santa Run Silicon Valley, a 5K Run/Walk Sunday, December 15, 2013 at 3:00pm, which promises to be fun for the whole family!

Are you passionate about conservation? The Implementation Board of the Santa Clara Valley Habitat Agency has established a Public Advisory Committee (PAC) to assist the Habitat Agency in implementing the Santa Clara Valley Habitat Plan (SCVHP). They are actively seeking applications from individuals who are interested in serving on the Committee which is comprised of nine members with a strong personal or organizational interest in the Habitat Plan goals and implementation, representing the following: business and development (2); environmental community (2); farming and ranching (2); general public (3). The deadline for applications is Monday, December 16, 2013. If you are interested in applying, please visit their website: www.scv-habitatplan.org
