Remember Not to Forget

Today marks the 69th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy … D Day.

Today marks the 69th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy … D Day.

It's a day and moment that deserves our reflection. Not for many of us who weren’t there but for those that were.

For me it was the world of my father, a black and white kinescope of Bogart and Bacall of goose stepping and flag waving and bluebirds (except they were grey) over white cliffs.

It was a world in which the horizon was perpetually covered by dark clouds. Not the clouds of metaphor but rather those which precede a storm of change. Black clouds which heralded the end of life as Americans knew it.

This was, in the parlance of today, “The real deal.”

It was a time not for nation building but culture saving. It was a time when the lines were clear, the good were easily identifiable and the evil was very real … a time to put or shut up.

And on that foggy morning, so very long ago, an entire generation stepped up. They stepped up and threw themselves in to Hell. Not because they were any braver than those before or after them. They did it because it needed to be done.

On July 31st Los Gatos Music & Arts Jazz on the Plazz will pay tribute to The Greatest Generation as award winning pianist Beegie Adair plays the music of World War II.

Freedom has long had a price, come help us thank those who paid it.
