Los Gatos Jazz on the Plazz: A Few Thoughts on Stacey Kent

Time to get out the old bucket list ... let’s see; climb Kilimanjaro ... maybe next year. Learn to juggle? Not gonna happen. Replace Johnny Carson? That ship has sailed. Oh wait, get out the Sharpie. We can cross one off. Stacey Kent is in town tomorrow!

Stacey has been a mainstay on my radio program for the past 20 years. Now understand that when I say, “mainstay,” I’m talking the likes of Frank Sinatra and Miles Davis.

If there is a better jazz singer around, I’ve yet to hear her. And since I’m name dropping ... Clint Eastwood invited her to sing at his 70th birthday party. Sir David Frost asked her to perform on his television show and no less than Steven Tyler lists Stacey among his favorite singers.

But, as they say, “Wait, there’s more.” The BBC named her best vocalist. The government of France has honored her and the Grammy committee has nominated her. Starting to get the picture?

And, as if her playing Jazz on the Plazz weren’t enough, she had the good sense a few years ago to marry one of the world’s great tenor players, Jim Tomlinson ... and she brought him along.

So get ready for an evening that for me has been a long time in the wishing. Get ready for Stacey Kent.
