Better Safe ...

My kids are all grown now, but there was a time when after buying my first child seat, I spent two hours wrestling with straps and clips, only to have a confused baby, sitting sideways, staring out the window.

Then when my second child arrived, I was forced with adding yet another seat. This one, oddly enough, faced the same direction!

So then I went the Romney route and tied them to the top of the car. And although the view was far superior, it just didn't seem right.

The bad news is that even today a scary number of child seats are installed improperly.

The good news is that the folks at Lexus of Stevens Creek in San Jose are doing something about it.

On Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 9 a.m. until noon, drop by their showroom and check if your child safety seats are ... safe.

There will be no charge for this service and it doesn't matter if you drive a Lexus or a Chevy. They just want to help.

This event is co sponsored by the CHP and the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford.
