Haunted Homecoming

Homecoming at Los Gatos High School.

Homecoming at could not have come any quicker this year. As students are finally settled in their classes, the homework just keeps piling on. Seniors, who are also occupied with college applications, find this semester to be one of the most stressful so far. It was about time for something to help us release our stress, and Coronation turned out to be just the thing.

Since Coro (short for coronation) is one of the two dances that every grade attends, students really go to full extremes to make it perfect. Weeks before its Oct. 29 date, boys begin thinking of creative ways to ask girls, and girls begin dreading not being asked.

No one wants to go alone. After three years of attending LGHS, I am happy to say that the creativeness reached a new maximum this year. More and more girls were walking around school with roses, posters saying "coro?" were hung up on walls where the girl would see them, and endless photos were uploaded to Facebook to show off the creative way someone was asked. My personal favorite was when a boy had our principal, Mr. Markus Autrey, call a girl out of class. The girl was so nervous, thinking she did something wrong, only to be surprised when the guy asking her showed up with flowers.

As the night approached, limos were ordered, hair salons were fully booked, and restaurant reservation books were over flowing. Not to mention, malls filled up with girls looking for dresses—of course no dress was too expensive.

Coronation finally arrived and at around 8:30 p.m. Limos, party buses, and fancy cars pulled into the LGHS parking lot. As the line to enter grew, I walked down it and noticed how many beautiful people I saw standing in it. Everyone was looking their best, and ready for a great time. As we filed into the gymnasium, we were greeted with a beautifully decorated room, with drinks and snacks for our comfort. LGHS really knows how to put on a dance.

Next came the actual dancing. Now, I'm not talking about dancing the salsa, or the twist. The type of dancing that goes on that people tend to describe it as "going to the bathroom" or "wow that looks so uncomfortable." However, teenagers will be teenagers, and everybody seemed to be having an amazing time.

Half way through the night we all climbed up into the bleachers and anxiously anticipated the naming of our homecoming Queen and King. This year our homecoming court was phenomenal. All boys and girls who were on it were amazing students as well as huge participants in our school community. Almost the entire crowd stood up and cheered when Ben Wagner and Allie Vent were named as King and Queen. Wagner is a driven athlete participating in track and cross-country, leading them as captain. He is well known around school for his entertaining personality. Vent is captain of the nationally ranked cheerleading team and well known for her compassion and kindness toward others.

For some the night ended after the dance; for others the night wouldn't end for hours, but for the majority, that night was something they would talk about for weeks to come.
