Skin Care You Can Eat

Look at nourishing your skin as important as nourishing your body.

I recently attended an Ayurvedic skin care workshop taught by Talya Lutzker at Breathe Yoga Studio.

It gave me a whole new view on what it means to take care of my skin.

The skin is the largest organ in your body. When you apply something to this organ, it gets absorbed into the blood stream. Your digestive system, to a certain extent, is able to remove toxins from the food we eat but the skin has no such filter. Therefore, it makes even more sense to use skin care products you know will be good for your body.

I learned that ghee is incredibly nourishing for your skin. I always thought ghee was difficult to make and never tackled it. But it is simple and when the butter is bubbling on the stove-top, it makes a soothing sound; accompanied by a sweet smell in the air.

In less than half an hour and $5 later (for organic unsalted butter), you have a skin care product that lubricates you from the inside out as ghee is very supportive of our digestive process. The vegan option is coconut oil.

Instead of using lotion on your skin which you would never dream of eating, you can simply use grape seed, olive, and/or sesame oil. The nourishment can be aided by adding specific essential oils to help with whatever your body is challenged with during each season.

I used to not like oil on my skin much. Now, I enjoy the smooth silkiness producing a healthy glow.

These principles, described here in the most elementary form as I am a novice, are based on Ayurvedic medicine; a holistic health care system where yoga is the chosen exercise.

There is a rich holistic lifestyle that goes with Ayurvedic medicine and I am eager to know more. Being exposed a little bit to the Ayurvedic approach to skin care and how much sense it makes to me, I want to learn more about the Ayurvedic approach to food.

This is why I am really excited to do my first Ayurvedic food-based cleanse with Talya Lutzker at Breathe Yoga Studio.

She started with an orientation Wednesday evening where I received my manual with step-by-step instructions on how to go about the seven-day cleanse, which begins on St Patrick's Day!

I'm hoping you'll join us as the more people participate, the bigger our cleanse community becomes, and the more support we'll give each other.
