Los Gatos Gathers in Gratitude

About 300 worshipers attend interfaith Thanksgiving service Tuesday evening at LDS Church.

We must give up our complaints and our egos to acknowledge God in all things, Los Gatos United Methodist Church Rev. Jennifer Murdock urged the about 300 people who participated Tuesday evening in the interfaith Thanksgiving service at the LDS Church on Rose Avenue.

The admonition came as Murdock gave the keynote address during the religious observance speaking about “The Sacrifice of Praise.”

"What is sacrificial about praise? ... We give up our complaints and we give up our ego because praise can only be offered from a posture of humility," she said.

About 300 Los Gatos residents gathered for the annual service sponsored by the Los Gatos Interfaith Clergy Association. The event's purpose is to unite all faiths in the commonality of the spirit of Thanksgiving, organizers said.

The service has been sponsored for several years by the association after it decided long ago to pause and express gratitude for blessings on the Tuesday of Thanksgiving week, since so many people travel by Wednesday evening.

The liturgy featured lots of congregational participation, including hymns and responsive readings. A choir from the various faith communities presented the anthem, “My Grateful Spirit Sings.”

The audience also enjoyed a children’s story time with about a dozen youngsters present.

Worshippers provided two Thanksgiving offerings: many food items were left in the foyer for Second Harvest Food Bank. They also came forward during the service to leave $1,600 in the basket for the Habitat for Humanity All Faiths House in Cupertino.  Members of Los Gatos faith communities will help build the house beginning this fall.

Folk stayed around a long time in conversation in the church's Cultural Hall over cookies and punch.
