5 Things You Need to Know Today, Nov. 26

Continue to celebrate the start of the holidays by shopping local today as you participate in Small Business Saturday and then enjoy the Alice in Wonderland play at West Valley College and the Fantasy of Lights show.

1. West Valley College Theater Department presents Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland at 2 and 8 p.m., tonight, Saturday, Nov. 26, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, in the campus' main theater, 14000 Fruitvale Ave., Saratoga. Tickets are 12 for the general public and $10 for students and seniors. Details: 408-741-2058.

2. The second annual Small Business Saturday takes place today all day in downtown Los Gatos. Free valet parking is provided 9 a.m.-9 p.m. at parking lot behind Purrsnickety and Bow Wozer. Tipping is optional. The event was created to celebrate the Shop Small movement to drive shoppers to local merchants across the U.S. More than 200 organizations have already joined American Express OPEN, the company’s small business unit, in declaring the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small Business Saturday.

3. The 13th annual Fantasy of Lights show began 6-10 p.m., Friday, Nov. 25 and continues through Saturday, Dec. 31 every evening, including holidays, at Vasona Lake County Park, 333 Blossom Hill Rd. The event consists of a 1.5-mile drive-through holiday lights and display entertainment extravaganza. According to organizers, the show is the premier holiday lights spectacular in Northern California. Details: 408-355-2201.

4. Dec. 8 is the deadline to apply to serve on a town advisory body to make a positive, lasting difference in your community. There are vacancies on the Arts and Culture Commission, Parks Commission, the Building Board of Appeals, the Parks Commission and Transportation and Parking Commission. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for Monday, Dec. 19. Details: 408-354-6880.

5. The Town is soliciting proposals from artists for banner designs for downtown Los Gatos. The banners will be installed in downtown Los Gatos, in the area surrounding Town Plaza Park. Artists must be 16 years of age or older, and must be a resident of Los Gatos, including its unincorporated neighborhoods. Designs must be on the theme of "The History and Arts of Los Gatos," or of "The Flora and Fauna of Los Gatos." Proposals are due by 5 p.m., Jan. 18, 2012. Details: Regina Falkner, 408-354-6832.
