Happy New Year! Jewish High Holy Days Start Wednesday

Rosh Hashanah, Jewish New Year, begins Wednesday at sundown.

Los Gatos' Congregation Shir Hadash, 20 Cherry Blossom Lane, will celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, Wednesday evening Sept. 4 with a service at Sacred Heart Church, 13716 Saratoga Ave., in Saratoga.

Jewish holidays traditionally start in the evenings at sundown.

According to the Congregation Shir Hadash website, tickets are available for the 8 p.m. Wednesday services by calling 408-358-1751, ext. 5.

Congregation Shir Hadash will also offer family Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5 in its sanctuary, 20 Cherry Blossom Lane, in Los Gatos.

"We encourage you to take your children to the lively family services on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur afternoons," the website said.

On Rosh Hashanah the service will be led by Rabbi Melanie Aron, Rabbi Levenberg, Cantor Felder-Levy, and Early Childhood Center Director Robin Adelman.

On Yom Kippur, the family service will be led by Rabbi Josh Lobel, Rabbi Levenberg, and Early Childhood Center Director Robin Adelman.

These services, geared to children ages 2–6 and their families, are free and open to the public. The congregation welcomes the general public.Rosh Hashanah, Hebrew for "head of the year," is the first of the Jewish High Holy Days for the new year.

Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is another Jewish High Holy Day this fall. Yom Kippur begins on Sept. 13.
