SNAP Protests Religious Brother in Los Gatos Accused of Sexual Molestation

Members of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests hold news conference at noon in town to alert community that Brother 'Bill' William Farrington is the subject of two investigations of alleged sexual abuse.

Members of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests were walking around downtown Los Gatos at noon Wednesday alerting the community that Brother "Bill" William Farrington, who resides at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, has been named as a credible molester of children in Northern California.

Joey Piscitelli, Northern California director of SNAP, stood at the intersection of College Avenue and E. Main Street with fliers in his hand that read, "Protect your children. Accused sex offender Catholic priest!"

"We're trying to alert the town of Los Gatos that there's an alleged serial sexual predator that's been roaming around unsupervised," Piscitelli said, after Channel 4 had interviewed him about the recent outing of the former religious brother who's been accused of sexual wrongdoing while working at Catholic schools.

Piscitelli said Jesuit High School authorities in Carmichael and Los Gatos Jesuit Center officials released statements Tuesday to the public that he's alleged to have molested children. At least one former Bellarmine College Preparatory student in San Jose and another at the Catholic school near Sacramento have come forward alleging Farrington molested them, Piscitelli said.

Father Alfred E. Naucke, with the Sacred Heart Center in Los Gatos, declined comment and referred all media inquiries to Patrick Walsh, the Order's spokesman.

It's believed that Farrington worked at Bellarmine in the '60s and '70s, Piscitelli said and worked up until 1987 at Jesuit High School.

Piscitelli has frequently visited the center located at 300 College Ave., just above Town Hall, to protest Father Jerold Lindner, whom Santa Clara County prosecutors have admitted is a known sexual offender.

a San Francisco man who had been accused of felony assault and elder abuse of the priest he said had raped and sodomized him and his brother while they were children. He was acquitted by a jury on July 5.

"What is alarming about this is that the Jesuits didn't make any effort to alert the community until now. He was removed in 2002 from ministry due to the allegations," Piscitelli said. "It takes 10 years for them to tell the community there's a predator. What has he done in the last 10 years? What has he done here? Where has he been? Who's watching him?"

Parents in the area need to know that Farrington is capable of molestation, Piscitelli added.

Walsh issued a press release on Tuesday that said Bellarmine College Preparatory alumni, who graduated from 1964 to 1974, will be receiving letters from Father Michael Weiler, the provincial of the California Jesuits, and fellow alumnus, Mike Grabill, who reports being sexually abused by Farrington in the 1960s while he was a boarding student at the school.

“Mike asked that I write to introduce his letter that relates his experience and encourages others who may have been abused to move along the path of healing as he has,” said Father Weiler, a 1972 Bellarmine graduate. “On behalf of my fellow Jesuits, I apologize to Mike and to anyone else who may have been abused. We desire to further the healing of anyone harmed by a Jesuit of this Province.”

Grabill, a 1968 Bellarmine graduate, told Jesuits that he had been sexually abused by Farrington, who supervised the school’s boarding students in the 1960s and 1970s, according to the release.

“At each step, I was met with an apology, concern, caring and willingness to help,” Grabill is quoted saying in the release. “They [the Jesuits] support my desire to send this letter as an expression of my care and concern for my classmates who might have had (during that time) similar painful experiences.”

Farrington was removed from ministry with minors after allegations surfaced from another former student, Walsh wrote in the release.

He now exercises no public ministry and lives under close supervision at the Jesuit infirmary in Los Gatos, he added.

His restrictions are reviewed annually by a lay advisory board that includes medical professionals, law enforcement and business leaders from the local civic community, he said.

Since the sexual abuse crisis surfaced 10 years ago, the California Province of the Society of Jesus has submitted itself to the supervision of Praesidium, an independent company which certifies the training and protocols meant to protect minors and ensure the proper reporting of  suspected abuse, the release stated.

Anyone who has experienced sexual abuse by a Jesuit of the California Province may contact law enforcement and the Victim Advocate for the California Province Ms. Mary Pat Panighetti at 408-893-8398, the release said.

Very, very, very Sad.... But what the Catholic Church does about it is even sadder....

Let's hope that every person who saw, suspected or suffered sex crimes and misdeeds by Brother "Bill" William Farrington or Father Jerold Lindner, will find the courage and strength to speak up and call police, not church officials. They are not the proper officials to be investigating child sex crimes. Keep in mind that child predators rarely have only one victim. And your silence only hurts, and by speaking up there is a chance for healing, exposing the truth, and therefore protecting others. I continue to be amazed by the things that go on within religious groups while they continue to tell us that they are the way to a virtuous and moral life.

A positive is that more people are speaking out and speaking up. Good for all of them!

It is outrageous that in the headquarters city of the California Jesuit Order – Los Gatos – that not one Jesuit will comment on breaking news on child sex abuse by a Jesuit. It thus appears to matter so little to the Jesuit Order that comments are outsourced.

The irresponsible Jesuit attitude appears to be that breaking news on child sex abuse by a Jesuit is not a Jesuit problem – merely a problem outsourced to a spokesman.

Regarding, “His restrictions are reviewed annually by a lay advisory board that includes medical professionals, law enforcement and business leaders from the local civic community.” This board may include Dr. Susan Greenberg-Englander with offices in Los Gatos. Dr. Greenberg-Englander is perhaps juggling the ethically challenging situation of board membership with having individual Jesuits who live at Los Gatos as patients and who could be abusers. Dr. Englander-Greenberg said that at one time 10% of her income involved the Jesuit Order.

Brother Farrington may still work in the Jesuit Los Gatos fund raising office and live in the same Jesuit Los Gatos building as Fr. Jerold Lindner, who has a record of $3 million in pedophile settlements. And Fr. Lindner has driven a car without even singing it out since 2002.

It's all disgusting! Shut the place down, put these sex offenders where they can't hurt anyone else, get help for those who been molested and let the town heal and move on!
LoyolaAlum September 13, 2012 at 02:36 PM
So does Br. Farrington leave Los Gatos with an escort and then say goodbye to the escort – and continue on his own alone – just like Fr. Lindner has done since 2002.

In the 70's & 80's doctor shows were very popular on television, expecially on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. And many of the people I worked with would come to work on Wednesday and Thursday with whatever ailment had been featured the night before. Everything from stomach ulcers to cancer, it was disgusting. The same thing seems to be happening here. One person accuses one Father and suddenly everyone has all of the lost memories, oh yeah, and I need money to heal. Since the Jesuits have chosen to pay off these self proclaimed victims, now everyone has a repressed memory of some attach that happened 40 years ago. Give me a break!

Jesuit Abuser promoted to Jesuit University after scandals According to the Los Angels Loyolan, September 17 Despite [credibly charged abuser] Farrington’s 15 years at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, LMU has yet to publicly comment on the scandal surrounding him. When asked whether the University would be sending out emails similar to those from Bellarmine Prep and Jesuit High, Kathleen Flanagan, LMU’s vice president for communications and government relations, stated, “As far as I know, there was nothing that happened at LMU, so there would be no reason to do it. We’re not aware of any accusation while he was at LMU.” University President David W. Burcham is currently traveling and, as of Loyolan deadline, could not be reached for comment. It is not known whether LMU was made aware of the allegations of abuse against Farrington when they hired him as, according to Flanagan, “the Jesuits keep the personnel files on him.” According to Flanagan, all LMU’s records indicate is that “he was a staff member and he was employed in the area that is now called enrollment management.” Flanagan was also unable to confirm whether Farrington lived on campus in the Jesuit Community. Acting Superior of the LMU Jesuit community Fr. Allan Deck, S.J., declined to comment, instead referring the Loyolan to Walsh. As of Loyolan deadline, Walsh was unavailable for comment.

No, I was not sexually abused as a child. I am a grown woman, who had sexual relations with a man who had been sexually molested as a child (by a Jesuit). This man grew up, got married, raised children and also struggled with a vicious (hidden) sexual addiction. This addiction ended his marriage through a tragic divorce. The addiction, which includes sex with prostitutes both men and women, was not only harmful to his health mentally and physically, but to his family members and myself as well. I contracted a lifelong disease because of his "acting out", and inability to be honest. Is that abuse as well? My point is; there is a sad and tragic cycle of abuse that must be broken. The ramifications are obviously more far reaching and broad than the child who was molested. How do we heal these wounds? I'm not sure. I do know they can't be covered up and allowed to fester. Wounds need fresh air, light and love...

Is Dr. Susan Greenberg-Englander on Jesuit abuser monitoring committee? Dr. Susan Greenberg-Englander, psychiatrist with offices near the Los Gatos Town Plaza Park, may be on the Jesuit committee (lay advisory board) which monitors the suspected abuser Br. William Farrington of Los Gatos. According to the Los Angeles Loyolan, the campus newspaper of Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles: Farrington now resides in the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, a facility for elderly Jesuits in Los Gatos, Calif. He cannot leave the center without an escort, and his “restrictions are reviewed annually by a lay advisory board that includes local medical professionals, law enforcement and business leaders,” according to the Sept. 12 Mercury News article, “Jesuit in Bellarmine abuse case also accused of misconduct at Sacramento school.”

New source on Jesuit sex abuse http://vu2103.katla.orangewebsite.com/jesuit-abuser-washed-up-on-hawaii-shores/ http://vu2103.katla.orangewebsite.com/ Sample article: Jesuit Clergy Abuser Washed Up on Hawaii Shores Posted on October 4, 2012 Another Chapter in Where in the World was Donald McGuire SJ – Hawaii This time at WTK we begin with a picture and not a document. In an image worth a thousand words and possibly millions more in monetary damages for victims, we have Donald McGuire SJ in Honolulu, Hawaii circa 2003. He was already under strict supervision from Chicago at the time of the picture and had to provide itineraries to his superiors for approval of travel. We don’t know if any young male “assistants” accompanied him to the sandy beaches of Honolulu, yet. Or if this was his only trip there? As WTK reported earlier McGuire’s good friend and fellow sued abuser Bishop Joseph Sullivan of Baton Rouge was subject to a lawsuit in Hawaii in 2005. Donald McGuire SJ didn’t know his ship was sinking while visiting Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Good Bye Statute of Limitations for Jesuit Abuse? Donald McGuire SJ is now a very interesting legal problem for the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus. For nearly the last decade the Chicago Jesuits and their attorneys, the best donated dollars can buy, have fought McGuire victims arguing most abuse fell outside the antiquated Statute of Limitations (laws limiting the time when a lawsuit can be brought).
