County Supe Mike Wasserman is Los Gatos Christmas Parade Grand Marshal

Longtime Los Gatos resident will lead popular holiday processional that attracts nearly 20,000 people at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.

A phone call from a member of the parade grand marshal selection committee revealed the good news that the former Los Gatos Council member and mayor will lead the Dec. 7 parade down North Santa Cruz Avenue and Main Street beginning at 11 a.m. rain or shine.

"I'm tremendously honored. At first I was speechless," Supervisor Wasserman said about learning of his selection.

"I've been helping kids for 20-plus years as a youth sports coach and elected official (Project Cornerstone, Youth Commission, soccer field, etc.) and to be recognized for those efforts in this way is awesome," he told Los Gatos Patch.

Wasserman explained the popular parade's grand marshal is always someone who has been a staunch supporter of the town's youth.

Wasserman said he will be riding in a couple of cars with his wife Kim and eight other family members behind this year's Youth Citizens of the Year.

They will be followed by the Boy Scouts holding flags to help start this year's parade, considered the longest continual running such parade in the U.S.A. and the largest Christmas processional on the West Coast.

The parade, with almost 250 entries last year, is said to attract nearly 20,000 people each year, with about 7,000 participants and an attendance of about 12,000.

Los Gatos Meats & Smokehouse owners John and Brian Chiala and daughter Jackie Rose were named the parade's grand marshals in 2012.
