Coach Gets Head Shaved After Los Gatos Soccer Championship Win

Los Gatos resident Tom Adams fulfills promise to go bald after Los Gatos United Soccer League under-12 Spartans team beats Broncos in penalty kicks.

Los Gatos United Soccer League coach Tom Adams got his head shaved the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 10 after his team, the under-12 girl Spartans, won the championship during an exciting finale determined by penalty kicks.

The games were played Nov. 2 and Nov. 9-10, culminating with Adams' fulfillment of a promise he had made the girls ... " ... If you guys win, I'll shave my head!"

During a nail-biting game played on the Raymond J. Fisher Middle School soccer fields, Adams said the Spartans beat the Los Gatos' Broncos after ending the game 0-0, going into penalty kicks and winning by 4-3 score.

"It was amazing," coach Adams told Los Gatos Patch about the experience. "I was trying to get the girls excited about the game and just before the girls hit the field, I said, 'Just want to let you know that if you win, I'll shave my head.' And they went crazy."

The head shaving occurred right after the game while he sat on the back of his truck and offered the 15 girls in the team an electric razor to do the job.

Adams has been coaching soccer as a volunteer for three years for LGUSL.

When he's not coaching, Adams designs and installs home automation systems all over the country.

Adams has lived in Los Gatos for three years and has a daughter in the team.

Why does he volunteer to coach the team? "I get lots of smiles and lots of hugs," he said. "The girls work so hard. I'm so proud of them."

The season is now over, but Adams said he will coach again next year.

Adams said although he didn't really grow up playing soccer, he became interested in coaching and learning more about the sport after watching his older son play in a LGUSL competitive club team.

"The League said it needed coaches, so I thought I would give it a try," he said.
