100-Year-Old Los Gatos Woman Can Still Play Bridge!

Fran Alfson is recognized on centennial birthday milestone due to her many accomplishments.

A 100-year-old Los Gatos woman recognized Monday evening by the Los Gatos Town Council is said to be a "force to be reckoned with" at the bridge table at the Adult Recreation Center in town.

Los Gatos Mayor Barbara Spector invited Fran Alfson to lead the body in the Pledge of Allegiance in recognition of her 100th birthday and her many accomplishments during this past century.

Alfson moved to Los Gatos in 1962 and has lived in the same house in town for the past 50-plus years.

She raised three daughters who all live in Los Gatos and has six grandchildren, one of whom was the head baseball coach at Los Gatos High School and now assistant baseball coach at San Jose State University.

All her grandchildren live in Los Gatos or the Bay Area and she has three great-great-grandchildren.

She's an active member of the Los Gatos History Club and she was a second-grade teacher in the Moreland School District for 16 years.

After she retired from teaching, she joined a publishing company for 10 years advising educators on how to teach reading.

Her late husband went to Stanford and was the superintendent of the Campbell Union School District.

She grew up in North Dakota where she rode a horse to school, Spector said.

"She has very busy days and she doesn't pay attention to her age," the mayor noted.

Alfson received a bouquet of flowers and a bag of gifts from the Council.

Alfson praised the Council "for doing a wonderful job," but said she thought the biggest issue facing the town was traffic.
