THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA is set in Mexico in 1940. Tour guide Rev. T. Lawrence Shannon, recently expelled from his Virginia church, is having a nervous breakdown while leading ladies from a Texas Baptist College on a tour through Mexico. Confiscating the bus ignition key, he is determined to crash for a few days at the Costa Verde Hotel run by an old friend, Maxine. The arrival of sketch artist Hannah and her 97-year young grandfather poet shifts Shannon’s feverish plan. Meanwhile, vacationing Germans festively celebrate the bombing of London, and night-swimming locals capture a giant iguana. How does one survive the psychological onslaught when circumstances confuse and sabotage emotions while keeping reason at a distance? Shannon eventually sees a way.
