In reviewing Rootstock on its directory listing on this site, Reader said: "Rootstock is the best new addition to downtown Los Gatos! It's a fun place to grab a glass of wine (they specialize in California varietals) and a snack. Be sure to try their baked eggs--it sounds a little crazy, but it's amazing!"

Rootstock general manager James Hayter was thrilled with the news that the wine bar had won the poll. "We're excited with the results. We're one of the newest wine bars in Los Gatos and to beat some of the older competition is great," Hayter said.

The establishment opened in October of 2011 and since its first day of operation its clientele has steadily grown, Hayter added. "Los Gatos has really supported us ... We're always busy in the early evenings and late afternoons. During a weekday we get more than 100 customers and on Fridays and weekends, it could be 200 to 300 for the whole day."

Rootstock has about 12 employees, including servers, cooks, a kitchen manager and Hayter serving as its certified sommelier. "Our staff takes tests every month in regards to new wines by the glass in our retail wine ... They definitely know the wines we're pouring," Hayter explained.

The business, owned by father Joe McCarthy, son Joey McCarthy and Jim Foley, serves delicious cheese and charcuterie or cured meat plates featuring pepperoni, salami, prosciutto, casalingo, etc. It also features a nice selection of high quality craft beers from California and around the country, Hayter added.
