New Los Gatos Gun Shop May See Protestors

Los Gatos moms are encouraging a boycott of the new Templar Sports store downtown.

When the new Templar Sports store opens its doors soon there may be more people waiting for them than customers.

A small grassroots group of Los Gatos mothers plans to be there Saturday to express its concerns about the store’s plans to sell guns.

“We are a small community of 30,000, but the idea that a store selling guns will be opening is beyond comprehension,” group organizer Shannon Susick wrote in an email to Patch on Friday.

The store at 611 University Ave. in downtown Los Gatos will serve the hunting, fishing, target sports, and law enforcement communities. Already some nearby residents have expressed concerns about the store and possible safety and security issues to the surrounding neighborhood.

Susick’s group, which formed Thursday night, includes three Los Gatos women with deep roots in the community who have attended local schools and raised children in town. They plan to be in front of the store at 10:30 a.m. Saturday to spread the word that they feel selling guns and ammunition in Los Gatos is inappropriate.

If it saves me having to drive 5 miles up the road that has to be a good thing for the environment. My Hummer does not give that good miles to the gallon and any reduction in miles driven is a bonus for me. Is there ample parking, will I be able to get the Hummer in or would it be best to take something smaller. Like my wife's Expedition?

Peter, you need to get your wife a better car!

I listened to LaPierre's speech. He's a prophet. All teachers should be armed all the time. In fact, let's not stop there: all education should be martial. Students should only be taught about guns, weapons, defense, security. Nothing else matters in life...except guns and gun use! It's understandable for parents to be concerned and desire a gun free Los Gatos or gun free planet for that matter. Reality is guns are all around us. I for one would much rather Templar sports open up in town where we have a town council that listens to the residents concerns and could act if something wasn't right, versus opening up a few miles away in San Jose and we have no, to little input on issues. It is my understanding that Templar sports is already working with residents concerns and adjusting. I welcome them.

Do they sell assault weapons? Maybe a nice semi-automatic rifle to protect my property against the marauding errr, squirrels? Seriously, did Los Gatos really need a gun store? Oh, and to the NRA - Most crazy people act sane most of the time, and you only realize they are crazy when it's too late...

I am saving up for an assault rifle for her - she can't have everything. I am good to her. I let her do all the washing and ironing.

I think it is a shame not to allow an honest Business Open. Guns are a wonderful asset to our Society and provide a great Benefit. Stopping Good guys n Gals from owning Firearms only makes bad guys feel more comfortable about Committing crimes. I too am a Born Citizen of Los Gatos and one of the Longest Generations of Native LG Residents. My Familys house has been recorded has Historical in LG which my Grandfather built. LG Residents need to stand alongside this New Business...LG is a Family of protection. Templar Guns offers us an added bonus of that protection, plus it keeps the Money IN THE TOWN...More of us than Not are supporters of small business and we want Templar Guns to Succeed...This comes from a founding Family of LG, not Newbies whom want to change us for what I believe could be the worse. LG Residents since 1908!!! We support you Templar Small business!!!

I too am a long time resident of LG. I think it is a good idea to allow this business to open in down town LG. I think what mooseLG said nails it on the head. We should support the small businesses that open in town to keep our town strong in these hard times. It also helps support our local police department in having a place to go to that may also offer information on classes to teach people about proper gun safety.

Guns are wonderful until someone shoots you or your children with one.

We were there protesting and most people driving by gave us the thumbs up and honked there horn in support. It was great to see people want change. Only a few people gave us the thumbs down and they were usually guys with big trucks.

Long time reader, first time poster. Someone from Templar Sports told me today that they had not announced any opening date other than "before the end of the year." They said they were surprised by the 'announcement' in the media about opening today. Apparently the protesters once again vandalized the business next to Templar Sports and the the police had to intervene to prevent further damage to property. There was a quote in another publication by "former mayor Sandy Decker" that "it appeared that Templar Sports opened briefly, but then closed in the face of the protest" but I have heard from many people that former mayor Sandy Decker is looking to run for office again and is aligning herself with this group in order to raise election funds. Former mayor Sandy Decker has been the behind the scenes power player on several things in Los Gatos of late. I don't know her personally, but the folks I know, that know her well, tel me to look closely at anything she is associated with.

As a resident of Los Gatos, I consider this issue important enough and would simply like to have the right to have a voice on the matter in the form of a vote. Consequently, I request the City Council, to give it equal regard and take all steps required to bring this within voteable preview. Not leave it saying, it is out of their hands. This has to be settled as a civilized society.
Michelle McNutt December 23, 2012 at 07:51 AM
I believe it is shameful what Patrice Petroff and Jayne Goldberg are doing. Regardless of opinions around current laws, vandalism is an unacceptable from of protest.
Peter Cook December 23, 2012 at 08:59 AM
Can we shoot vandals ?
Michelle McNutt December 23, 2012 at 03:50 PM
When I was there this was certainly not true Mr. Smith. And all but a few of my friends completely support Templar Sports. I have lived in Los Gatos for 32 years. From the beginning of all of this when Deborah Weinstein told the Patch that a "soft opening had occurred" and that "they will only sell assault weapons" there has been a steady stream of misinformation constantly spewed by a handful of people, some who don''t even live in Los Gatos full time (actually not even in the USA). Combined with the vandalism that originally occurred and then occurred yesterday by some of the protesters, I hope others will recognize the reality of what this business will be. Everything I have learned demonstrates an incredible level of professionalism, concern for safety, and commitment to community.

The opening "shot" (picture) at the beginning of this article -- the pistol almost directly pointed at the reader -- hints at the bias in the reporter's article. While generally factual, the opening picture sets the tone as "ominous". For those whose lives have been saved by a gun, I see no mention. The Second Amendment ensures that the defence needed by "We, the People" will not be infringed. The attempted closing off of sources for this protection/defence is truly ominous. The Los Altos citizens troubled by this gun store opening should get their facts straight and be thankful that legal, law-abiding citizens have the right and access to guns.
LG parent March 01, 2013 at 02:31 PM
Maybe you should get your facts straight Robert. The article is talking about Los Gatos, so I'm not sure why you're referencing Los Altos citizens!
Peter Cook March 09, 2013 at 07:43 PM
I am not sure why you can't understand why Robert probably meant "Los Gatos citizens". Have you stopped taking your medication? Or were you posting after your bedtime?
Travel Runner March 30, 2013 at 01:08 AM
Los Gatos always did have gun/sports stores ...you may recall the Wildcat Sports store of the 1960's, 70's, they carried sporting arms, fishing and hunting equipment. Many original LG folk enjoy these sports. Try it you may find a new interest !
