Los Gatos Braces For Cold Spell

Weather forecasters say a cold front is headed down from Canada, freeze warning and frost advisories will be in effect.

Los Gatos residents and those around the Bay Area may want to bundle up, as a cold-weather system is headed this way and will linger for several days, a National Weather Service forecaster said.

"Temperatures will start dropping tomorrow," forecaster Steve Anderson said this morning.

Daytime highs in the greater Bay Area are expected to be in the low 50s, and overnight temperatures will dip to about 35-40 degrees, he said.

"The overnight lows are not too crazy cold until you get out into the East Bay and North Bay valleys, where temperatures will be slightly below freezing," he said.

Anderson said a storm system is coming down from the Gulf of Alaska, and could bring rain to the Bay Area tonight and Thursday morning.

"Behind it, it's dragging cold air down from Canada," he said of the system.

The skies will clear after Thursday, but the cold weather will linger through the weekend, Anderson said.

Early Friday morning, between about 2 a.m. and 8 a.m., a freeze warning will be in effect for North Bay valleys, and a frost advisory will be issued for the South Bay, he said.

Anderson advised residents to make sure small outdoor pets have warm shelter, and to take precautions with plants that are sensitive to the cold.

"If they're potted plants, bring them inside if they're small enough, or throw a cover over them to keep the frost off if needed," he said.

The best defense if you can do nothing else, is to make sure any tender plants are well watered! You can buy 'Harvest cloth' at Green Thumb to blanket tender tropical like bougainvillea, angel trumpet, hibiscus and the like. Succulents and citrus are also highly susceptible to frost damage. The most damage usually results from consecutive days, not a single incident. Call Green Thumb ( 395-6050) for info or if you need any questions answered. I'll be there tomorrow and am happy to help!

Thanks, Joni. When I lived in Utah, we used to cover our perennials with canvas and it helped.

I always cover my perennials when it is cold otherwise they may shrivel and die.

A sheet or a blanket works just as well. This keeps warm air from the ground around the plant. For extra protection, you can place plastic over the sheet or blanket to help keep warmth in, but be sure to remove first thing in the morning to prevent condensation from freezing.

I find that they sweat a bit with the plastic. Merino wool gives a good airflow around them but keeps the chill off them.

Do you think I should give my wife's clematis a trim at this time of year? It is looking a little overgrown and could do with a bit of a tidy up and a trim. But I am wondering if it might get a bit too cold if I do that.
