Don't Miss the Super Moon Sunday—Biggest Luna of 2013

Weather.com is predicting a cloudy evening Sunday June 23, but because the second lunar perigee this year is supposed to be the biggest one of the year, it's worth the try to spot it with the naked eye.

On May 24, Bay Area sky enthusiasts enjoyed the first super moon of 2013, a time when the Earth was closer to the luna than it is the rest of the year due to an orbital variance.

According to EarthSky.org, the super moon will be fullest in the west at 4:32 a.m. Sunday, June 23, but it will appear full the evening of Saturday, June 22 as well.

The timeanddate.com website says moonrise will occur in the Bay Area just before 9 p.m. Sunday.

The moon will be 221,824 miles away from us, according to the Astronomy magazine's website, making it appear 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter to the naked eye.

The next super moon phenomenon occurs in July, but you won't see the luna this large until Aug. 10, 2014, according to EarthSky.org.

SHARE: If you take photos of the super moon, please post your pics and description of the night sky to our boards' section. We'll try to compile a photo gallery to share on Monday if enough images are uploaded.
