2 People Drown During Canoe Accident at Los Gatos' Lexington Reservoir

Victims are pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital following Sunday afternoon accident.

Two men, ages 30 and 35, were pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital Sunday afternoon after they and two others in a canoe capsized at Lexington Reservoir.

The canoe, which contained four people, capsized shortly after 1 p.m. about 50 yards away from the second boating docking station of Lexington Reservoir at 10000 Alma Bridge Road, according to Santa Clara County sheriff's spokesman deputy Kurtis Stenderup.

Two people, a 16-year-old girl and a 25-year-old man, swam to shore, but the oldest person in the canoe drowned and the 30-year-old man's body was recovered after 5 p.m., Stenderup said.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Dive Team spent about five hours looking for the second victim, sweeping the bottom of the reservoir with side-scan sonar.

All four persons are family members and none were wearing life vests. It's not known why they were out in the water, which was choppy and cold. The wind was blowing hard at Lexington Reservoir Sunday afternoon.

"We're not sure what caused the canoe to capsize at this point," Stenderup said.

On scene helping with the incident were the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department, the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department, Cal Fire, Santa Clara County Fire Department and Santa Clara County EMS.

The sheriff's dive team worked tirelessly looking for the second victim. The Los Gatos Rowing Club boathouse and dock were used as a staging area by the numerous emergency response teams.
