The Cat Lady, One Sultry and Sexy Female

In 1955 there was a really nasty flood in Santa Cruz. The San Lorenzo River breached its banks and drown the entire downtown of the seaside town. I was seven years old at the time and my father took me on several trips over the hill to go check out how bad this flood really was. Our Almaden Valley was covered in water as well, that year, but the news about Santa Cruz had my dad all curious has to how bad it really was over there. I still remember, it was pretty bad.

In the early 1970s, I rented a room from a lady who had a house in the old Santa Cruz flood plane. While the government had built up some dikes to tame the river and avoid floods like the one in ’55, some of the old-time landowners had another solution to the possible river floods. They jacked up their houses and set them on a new foundation of stilts. This lady’s house was one of those old Victorians that floated some six or eight feet off the ground. Some of her friends had walled in the spaces between the stilts and made them into rustic rooms to be rented. While the rooms were very basic, they were pretty much draft free and decently insulated. We renters used an upstairs bathroom adjacent to the back porch.

The woman who was the master of this place was named Audrey. She wasn’t real tall but she was taller than me by a several inches (but who over the age of 16 isn’t?). She had long, fine, black hair, limp and straight, but always well-kept. She was fine featured, willowy and lithe. She was demure without being coy. She was wholly self-confident and knew her capabilities and limits. She never talked too much but when she did say something, it was worth listening to, though it might often be laced with some subtle sarcasm and the hint of a smile.

Audrey was one of those people who, in a small town, everyone is aware of but no one seems to know much about.
