More than two thousand bicycles will be built in San Jose on Saturday, Dec. 7, and members of the county Deputy Sheriffs’ Association and the Correctional Peace Officers’ Association will be among those with wrenches in their hands.
Turning Wheels for Kids, an organization that gives bikes and helmets as holiday gifts to children whose families can’t afford them, sponsors the project. Builders will assemble bikes at the San Jose Convention Center starting at 9 a.m. at South Hall, 439 South Market St.

“A lot of the fun of being a kid comes from zipping around the neighborhood on a bicycle,” said Roger Winslow, DSA vice president.

“Riding a bike makes children more physically fit, fights obesity and starts a lifelong habit of regular exercise. Even in this day of video games and tablet computers a bicycle is still at the top of a child's Christmas list," he noted.
Susan Runsvold founded the organization in 2003. Since then, volunteers have built 13,000 bicycles for local children.
