What Should Go Here?

New retail building being constructed in front of Los Gatos Motor Inn Hotel on Los Gatos-Saratoga Road wants your input on what businesses should be allowed in the space.

An 8,700 square-foot retail building and the renovation of the is approaching completion on Los Gatos-Saratoga Road, right across from the

And property owner Pelio & Associates, of Saratoga, is asking town residents what should be leased in the retail space, which is tentatively planned to be divided into six spaces.

A sign outside the construction site, 53 Los Gatos-Saratoga Rd., announces the new retail opportunities "coming soon" and asks townsfolk to help decide who the lessees should be by voting with a text with the subject line "LOS" to 66782.

It then lists the "current leaders" as:

  • Chipotle
  • Yoga Studio
  • Starbucks
  • Peet's Coffee
  • P.F. Chang's
  • Beauty Salon

"It's almost done," said Joseph Palafox, project architect with Dennis Kobza & Associates, based in Mountain View. "Probably within the next eight months or so it will be completed, at the most."

Palafox explained the property owner and the lease broker Bob Quigley, senior vice president of SRS Real Estate Partners in San Jose, are being flexible with potential lessees who might be interested in renting more than one of the planned partitions.

"If we get one tenant, it's OK. It all depends on the size the tenant will need. It's very flexible," Palafox added.

Palafox said the owners had to request a building permit to remodel the hotel and the construct the commercial building, which is just about a mile away from downtown Los Gatos. He declined to reveal how much the project has cost.

On the hotel's website, owners indicate they're open during the construction 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

In April, the hotel updated the project's status announcing that the retail building's framing was completed and that the hotel's lobby and pool are coming soon. "We anticipate being fully completed with renovations by this fall," the hotel's website said.

Prior to the retail building being constructed, the hotel's front was empty land, according to Palafox.

For leasing information, the sign says to call Quigley at 408-553-6135 or 408-216-2317.

Please light a match, collect the insurance and put it back the way it was. Yes it was ugly before but now it is indescribably hideous. Coming from the down the hill all you see is the flat roof. Coming up from below looks like cheap corporate architecture. I realize you can't legislate good taste but is beyond the pale of....................

i agree with mr. arzie, the new structure is terrible, no design consideration given to the actual site elevation

I'm a fan of PF Chang's. Best quality feud of those choices. If not that, Peet's. Best quality coffee. Yoga Studio is certainly an interesting choice, but it's probably the riskiest.

I thought that Chiptole is already opening where the Hollywood Video used to be?

I love PF Changs and I don't think LG has enough good Chinese restaurants.
Larry Arzie August 23, 2012 at 03:16 PM
PF Chang is a chain operation, good but why not go for the best: Chef Chu at the corner of San Antonio and El Camino?
Mary F. Lucia August 23, 2012 at 06:28 PM
I believe the owner is Pelio not Belio & Associates. What about moving back Edna Rays Chinese Restaurant? Please no more coffee stops unless attached to a bookstore. Yoga or fitness center would be nice.

Thanks for catching that, Mary. I'll fix.

I totally agree...it is so tacky...pretty soon this Town of Los Gatos will become the City of Los Gatos. Why is every square inch being built on? Retail, commercial or residential, the vultures are circling. We are losing our identity as the small town village nestled in the palm of the beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains...look around: the traffic is horrendous, our schools are bursting and parking anywhere is impossible.

Would very much Love to see a PF Changs in Los Gatos!

I think this is a perfect location for a coffee shop. For those of us that live in East LG (near Kennedy, Vista del Monte, etc) this would be the only coffee shop between home and the freeway. Currently if you want coffee in the morning you have to get stuck in local school traffic...Agree that a small bookstore would be a good idea, but people will have to buy (not just browse) for this store to stay in business...

PF Changs would be terrible; consider the parking, the restaurant's footprint is usually huge, (it's a corny chain restaurant) is not authentic at all, and most importantly the food is soooo unhealthy! A coffee shop would be terrific for the neighborhood, a small healthfood market, a bread bakery.

Also, yes I agree the roof is an eyesore. Why didn't they make it a "living roof"? Think California Science Museum.
Mckenna Smith August 24, 2012 at 05:49 PM
With all the rave about food trucks, why another restaurant? Peet's Coffee could add some ambience to the area
AJ November 08, 2012 at 07:56 PM
Please look again. The roof is not flat. It is pitched. The design does not look like corporate architecture. It blends with the surrounding areas. I suggest that you visit and enjoy the place after completion of the project. You will enjoy being there.

We don't need another Starbucks, that's for sure. Chipolte is already on the corner of Blossom Hill and Los Gatos Blvd. We don't need PF Changs. We need to encourge more unique companys for food, stores, entertainment and others not mentioned. Maybe talk with one of the owners at Santana Row and convince them to open a second location here. Please no more Starbucks though. Two is enough.
