What Happened to The Green Papaya?

Restaurant seems to have closed without any public notification.

, the quaint Vietnamese food restaurant in the heart of downtown Los Gatos, has officially closed, leaving many customers wondering what happened.

Was the restaurant, located at 137 No. Santa Cruz Ave., a victim of the still-sour economy? Did the owners have a hard time retaining customers?

Neither town officials nor staff seemed to know what caused the eatery to shutter, saying only they had heard the news and had seen the restaurant's large glass windows covered up with paper from the inside.

Los Gatos Assistant Town Manager Pamela Jacobs said she believed the restaurant has closed and added that "given the ongoing demand for restaurant space in Los Gatos, we’re sure that another restaurant will lease the premises in a timely manner."

Employees who work for the restaurant's neighbors, and ., said the owner of the property had already leased the space to a new eatery coming in.

The restaurant's website is still active, but the phone number listed for the business is no longer in service.

I have no idea why they actually closed, but we took the family there a few days before it happened and everything was in a disarray. The food and service were terrible- truly terrible. We had eaten there before and wondered what had happened. Now we know!

The food was usually very good, the service not so much. It didn't matter if you went for lunch or dinner the service was ok at best and very slow. I did once get food poisoning from the pho, but other than that had always been very happy with the food. They also never seemed to have the wine by the bottle we wanted to order that was on the menu! Sad to see them go.

A source is telling me the rent was increased quite a bit and owners decided to leave. Who knows who owns this property? I'm getting an assessed value for the building on the county assessor's office Web site as well as a billing address, 987 University Ave. #3, in Los Gatos, but not the name of the property owner. If you know, please email at sheila.sanchez@patch.com.

I'm so sad to see GP go!! Their lemongrass soup was a little slice of heaven. I miss it! I hope the space is taken by another Asian-inspired restaurant. We need it!
