Slightly More Unemployed in Los Gatos this June

While the state's unemployment rate decreased, Bay Area cities had just the opposite experience.

The state's unemployment rate decreased slightly last month while many Bay Area counties saw slight spikes in unemployment numbers, according to Friday's report by California employment officials.

Among those towns, Los Gatos' unemployment rate increased 0.3 percent to 5.7 percent in June compared to 5.4 percent in May.

Santa Clara County's rate also increased from 8.2 to 8.7 percent.

In June, California had a 10.7 percent unemployment rate, down from May's 10.8 rate, according to the state Employment Development Department.

Marin County, with the lowest jobless rate in the state, bumped up to a 6.6 percent unemployment rate from 6.3 percent in May.

Also in the Bay Area, San Francisco's rate reached 7.8 percent from 7.4 percent in May.

And despite the need for more engineers in Silicon Valley, accord to the EDD the top three occupations with the most job openings in Santa Clara County are retail salespersons, cashiers and waiters.

The fastest growing occupations are network systems and data communications analyst and home-care aides.

The national jobless rate was unchanged in June at 8.2 percent.

The state's unemployment rate is derived from a federal survey of  5,500 households around California.
