Patch Watch: Illegal A-Frame Signs

Should non-conforming business signs be banned and violators be punished by the Los Gatos Code Compliance Division?

A reader sent these photos to us taken in downtown Los Gatos demonstrating what he called an "ever increasing" A-frame sign violation, which is against the Los Gatos Town Code.

According to town code: "No person or owner shall erect or permit a sign to be located outside of a building or business, unless authorized by a town-issued permit.

"The term 'sign' shall include "A-frame" signs, sandwich boards, banners, or any other type of off-premise sign located anywhere outside the building. The area 'outside' a business includes doorways, walkways, sidewalks, and driveways leading toward the entrance of a business."

A complaint about a possible code violation may be made by letter, telephone, email, or in person to the appropriate town department. In an average year, the town receives several thousand complaints related to possible code violations, according to the Los Gatos Code Compliance Division.

LOCATION: Downtown Los Gatos

PROBLEM: Proliferation of A-frame signs outside businesses.

RESPONSIBLE AGENCIES: Los Gatos Code Compliance Division, 408-399-5720, or to file a code-compliance complaint form, please click here.

Sheila, you left out the best sign of all. "Massage". It goes very nicely with the upstairs window of the massage parlor that has a neon sign on Santa Cruz Ave that says "open" during the early evening. Speaking of blight, you might want to check out lighted signs and the percent of space allowed for signs on store fronts. Since the current power clique on Council took over 10 years ago, blight has been a welcome sign. Mc Nutt and Prizynski and now Rice are pro anything that supports the money machine.

Besides all these horrible A-frame signs, I am appalled and disgusted by the banners constantly hanging on Walgreens and Safeway. We know they have pharmacies and offer shots. Enough! And.... what about all the posters in windows-- I thought there was a limit to that. Razzberry Lips is probably the tackiest store in LG (sadly next to one of the nicest restaurants), but those paper signs in the window advertising piercing, etc. put it over the top.

Not sure what to say about this ... yes, I think they're kind of ugly. I'm not sure what the sign ordinance allows, but it seems that many businesses do not feel they have adequate signage while staying within code, so maybe some sort of review and possible compromise is in order?

You can't legislate good taste so it is best to stick to the rules. Get rid of A Frames on public right of ways, and adhere to sign ordinances.

Maybe because business has been sloow, they feel the need to make sure everyone knows they are still open for business. If they are following town code, maybe some changes need to be made. I am do follow the town codes when I put my open house signs, but I'm sure those signs are not liked by some people either.
