New Bookstore Opening in Los Gatos!

Independent bookshop to officially open its doors Saturday, July 20.

Bookworms in town ... your wish has come true!

After Borders closed in April of 2011, Los Gatos residents have been without a formal business where books are the main items offered.

On July 6, Steve and Cheryl Hare posted on Los Gatos Patch that they're opening Village House of Books July 20 at 326 Village Lane, suite A, behind Pedro's Restaurant and Cantina. Its hours of operation will be 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sunday.

On June 24, the owners posted at the end of a blog post on the site about the lack of a bookstore, the following:

"Hello everyone your wish is my command! We are about to open an eclectic independent hometown book store. Village house of books on village lane. Coming soon late July. Words words words (Shakespeare ) Hamlet. See you there. Steve and Cheryl Hare."

Los Gatos resident Maria Ristow was excited with the news, posting the following at the end of Village House of Books' announcement: "Great news! I can't wait to stop in! I love paper books, and I enjoy looking and touching when I shop. Online is ok if I need a specific book, but nothing beats browsing and talking to an informed shopkeeper for the next great read!"

Since the closing of Borders, voracious readers in town have been going elsewhere to buy their books, shopping online for their favorite authors and supporting the Friends of Los Gatos Public Library nonprofit organization's bookstore at the former town library location, 110 E. Main St.

The Friends have been encouraging the community to support their sale of books since proceeds directly benefit the new Los Gatos Library, 100 Villa Ave.

The Friends' bookstore features quality donated books on a variety of topics, which are sold at affordable prices. The Friends have also been selling their books in the lobby of the new library by the coffee cart and on their Amazon on-line store.

The Friends' bookstore's hours of operation are 1-7 p.m. Tuesday; 2-6 p.m. Thursday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday; and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.

Attempts to leave messages for the Hares were unsuccessful at the number listed on their announcement on the site: 408-354-6600. We've also emailed them at info@villagehouseofbooks.net seeking comment. This number is also listed on the business' website: 855-281-2090.
