Argentinian brothers Michael and Alex "Marco" Mendez' Mmoon Empanadas, 81 W. Main St., has closed its doors forever.

The business opened in town Aug. 4, 2012 next to Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company.

The Mendez brothers also own another Mmoon Empanadas location in downtown San Jose’s historic San Pedro Square at 177 W. Santa Clara St. It was opened in September of 2010.

A message posted to the business' door states that the Mendez brothers closed in downtown Los Gatos effective Saturday, Jan. 11.

"We are thankful to our customers who helped make this a great experience. We hand-made over 600,000 empanadas and it has been an honor to introduce a small taste of Argentina to the community," the message said.

The message also said that the location will now be occupied by Zona Rosa, a Mexican farm-to-table concept owned by a family friend of the Mendez family.

"The food is amazing and we think you will enjoy it!" the brothers said.

Some of the empanada varieties included macaroni and cheese, carne (beef), pollo (chicken) and queso y cebolla (cheese and onions), corn, spinach, sausage and jamon y queso (ham and cheese), to name a few.

Looked up Zona Rosa at the downtown location looks like a great place. Unfortunately businesses come into Los Gatos and raise prices on their product. We in Los Gatos also are looking for a great place to eat at a reasonable price. Don't make the mistakes of the past!

Restaurants and shops coming to Los Gatos also have to pay the exorbitant rent. Some landlords will keep jacking up the rent, then claim they can only find a formula-retail or restaurant to lease the space. Surprise?

Indeed, high rent likely has a lot to do with this.
