Hats off to Mike Calise for his leadership in establishing public charging stations for electric vehicles; we just ordered a Tesla electric sedan - it is phenomenally engineered, the design is head turning, it gets almost 300 miles on a full charge. Question to Mike: will any of the public charging stations has a 220 volt option, even at a higher price than the 120 volt standard? regards, Gil Decker

Hi Lu Ann, Thanks for the comment. There will be about 20 new EVs or PHEVs on the road in just a few years. The range will improve too... Nissan, Chevy, and Tesla are just the start... Ford, Toyota, Audi, VW, BMW, Chrysler, Porche, many more...

Hi Gil, Thanks for the comment. Most of the publically available stations from ChargePoint and Schneider Electric (plus others) are the 220V/30A versions meaning they are considered "Level 2". That's a much higher rate of charge vs. the 110V/15A "Level 1" outlets. We are working nationwide to install a massive amount of L2 chargers making them ubiquitous charging virtually everywhere. In addition, between certain cities the industry is putting in "Level 3" chargers (properly called DC Quick Chargers) that will charge Lu Anne's LEAF 80 pct in about 20minutes. There’re some standards to be worked out in 2012, but by 2013 we will see them in convenient spots along major highways. We are working with Tesla to deploy Tesla only Superchargers so you can add another 150 range while you stop for lunch… What the masses will begin to realize about the Tesla is that is has a center of gravity equal to a Lamborghini, but seats five (and 2 extra kids with rocker seat option) so seven people. What this means is it may be the safest sedan in existence because you cannot get the car to drift even at high speeds. The “skateboard” design will disrupt gas powered vehicles that will eventually feel like driving a double decker bus in comparison. Also the front crash impact zone is large due to no engine. Mike

Thanks Irene! The show is expected to air at 7:30am but my DirectTV listing says 4:30am - so unless you are an insomniac like me, best use the DVR or you might catch a Frasier rerun. :-) 5 hours of taping for 5 minutes of show time. (I will have to keep my day job...) Best, Mike
