Downtown Los Gatos Safeway to Open

Grand opening scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday.

Los Gatos shoppers will have more choices to buy their groceries come Thursday when the new downtown Safeway will open to the public.

The store, at 470 No. Santa Cruz Ave., is expected to be opened from 6 a.m. until midnight or maybe even 24 hours a day like the Safeway at 15549 Union Ave., according to future employees who didn't want to be identified.

The grand opening is scheduled for 4 p.m., according to the store website.

Count on it being fancier than the other two stores in town and include everything that most similar stores have, such as a bakery, deli, meat department, seafood area, lots of beautifully decorated aisles, customer service center and even underground parking.

According to the store's website, the business will be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, certified.

Safeway recently completed construction of its first LEED-certified project in Santa Cruz. Future stores will be built to similar standards, according to the site.

Other nearby Safeway stores are on Pollard Road, Winchester Boulevard and Budd Avenue and Hamilton Avenue.

Los Gatans have many fancy choices when it comes to buying groceries, including Lucky in nearby San Jose, on Blossom Hill Road and and on Los Gatos Boulevard.

The new Safeway conducted a job fair to hire its employees, according to workers on the site who didn't want to be identified.

I'm delighted to see the new Safeway open. I shopped primarily at the old store in that location, and I've missed it. It will be odd riding an elevator to enter and leave, but I enjoy being in shiny new buildings. I think the new design is easy on the eyes. It's too bad that the view is impacted by moving the facade closer to N. Santa Cruz, but I can live with that trade-off. Welcome back, Safeway!

I second Alastair's comment. I thought that it wasn't due to open until 1212, so this is wonderful news. The other grocery stores in LG are more expensive, so I shop at Safeway. Having the deli soups, etc., will make it my only grocery store.

I am hoping that this Safeway will be offering a much wider selection of both local and organic produce.

"Other nearby Safeway stores are on Pollard Road, Winchester Boulevard and Budd Avenue and Hamilton Avenue." Please note there is one more very large Safeway in the Town of Los Gatos. The 24-hour supermarket is located at the corner of Union and Los Gatos-Almaden Road.
