Heritage Day

Saratoga celebrates Heritage Day on Saturday September 29 from 12-3 PM with costumed Saratoga historic characters, music, historic walking tours, lecture by the author of The Last of the Prune Pickers and more. Over 40 costumed historic characters will be introduced at 12 noon in Blaney Plaza by Vice Mayor Jill Hunter and then will spend from 12-3 PM strolling Big Basin Way or will be located in the Saratoga History Museum. Musicians will be stationed along Big Basin Way.

According to Vice Mayor Jill Hunter, "This is a great opportunity for the community to get to know their history. We’ll be handing out a short quiz for elementary age school children as well as older students to ask questions of the historical characters. We are also handing out free autograph books with information on the historical figures."

The Saratoga History Museum will offer a free lecture by Tim Stanley, author of The Last of the Prune Pickers, free film produced in the 1920’s showing the Valley of Heart’s Delight; free docent-led historic walking tours; and more. Children’s games of the 1800’s will take place outside from 12 to 4:00 PM. Docent-led tours of the historic McWilliams House and the one-room schoolhouse will also be available.

Town Historian Willys Peck will be on hand to autograph his books.

In addition to the permanent exhibits, the current special exhibit, "A Day in the Hills" featuring Senator Phelan and his home Montalvo, will also be open to the public. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Villa Montalvo.

Sponsored by the Saratoga History Museum, author Tim Stanley will give a free presentation at 1:00 PM on "The Last of the Prune Pickers." The entertaining presentation is based on his book by the same name, includes the history of the orchards that once covered the Santa Clara County,, Sunsweet and the end of the orchard era. The presentation will take place at the IOOF hall on 14414 Oak Street in Saratoga.

The Valley of Heart’s Delight film, produced in the 1920’s by the San Jose Chamber of Commerce provides a snap shot of the many entertaining areas of Santa Clara Valley (aka the Valley of Heart’s Delight), early images of Highway 101, glimpses of life in Palo Alto, Mountain View, hot mineral springs at Alum Rock and Saratoga’s Blossom Festival. The film will be shown at 2:00 PM.
