Los Gatos' Sally Ashton Ends 2 Years As County Poet Laureate

Ashton, Cupertino's Poet Laureate Dave Denny and former Los Gatos Poet Laureate Parthenia Hicks continue to meet as PL3 to support poetry in local communities; the three poets also have a new anthology to be released in June called 'Local

 

Santa Clara County Poet Laureate Sally Ashton joined Dave Denny, laureate of Cupertino and Parthenia M. Hicks, Los Gatos laureate emeritus Thursday evening at Palacio’s Restaurant in celebration of Ashton’s completion of two years as the region's muse.

Ashton, Hicks and Denny, also known as the PL3, began meeting two years ago to share their ideas about bringing poetry to their perspective communities and have become friends.

They have participated in each other’s events and brainstormed ideas for raising awareness of poetry and continue to support each other in creating events for students and new and experienced poets. 

And they aren’t alone. In June, they appear along with Nils Peterson, Santa Clara County laureate emeritus, and Erica Goss, current laureate of Los Gatos, in an anthology, Local Habitations, with a cover designed by internationally known local artist, Harry Powers. Stay tuned for the release party that will be held in Cupertino, sponsored by Dave Denny.

Ashton, when asked what she most enjoyed about her two years of Laureateship, commented on the Poetry on the Move project in which poets were invited to write about the topic of “Invention.” Winners’ poems were posted on public transportation, including the VTA light rail and buses.

Ashton want poets to know that Santa Clara County will be seeking applicants for the next poet laureate position in late summer.
