Los Gatos Creek Swells With Rains

Stormy weather this week causes traffic jams on Highway 17, flooding of Los Gatos Creek Trail and debris caught on storm drains.

March is supposed to come in like a lion and go out like a lamb as far as the weather goes ... but in Los Gatos and surrounding South Bay communities it was more like the month was going to set record rainfall totals due to the week-long storms that have soaked the area.

First, several systems last weekend drenched the town and all its neighboring cities. Then came daily storms this week. At the Vasona Pump Station, a forecaster with the National Weather Service said, about 1.5 inches of rain had fallen in a 24-hour period Thursday.

Los Gatos Parks and Public Works employees were working hard to keep storm drains and catch basins clear to prevent flooding Thursday. Still, a section of the Los Gatos Creek Trail, at Lark Avenue and Charter Oaks Drive, was several feet under water.

The Santa Clara Valley Water District also released water from Lexington Dam to accommodate the extra rainfall being received from this week's series of storms. In turn, Vasona Dam was also at over capacity.
